The story
of Goldener Engl

A place where the past comes alive

Goldener Engl tells stories – of craftsmen, citizens, guests, and hosts. Every stone, every floorboard, every room carries memories that are still tangible today.

Where history lives and people become part of it

There are places you enter – and suddenly it is quiet. Not because no one speaks, but because something speaks that goes deeper: historic walls whispering, creaking floors telling tales, rooms welcoming you as if you had been there long ago.

Goldener Engl is such a place. For over 700 years it has stood in the heart of Hall. Around 1300, Hall became wealthy from salt and silver – and Engl grew right into this golden era. City walls were built, townhouses erected – and in one of them, the heart of hospitality already beat early on.

From City Fire to Gothic: A New Era Awakens

Around 1450 – after a devastating city fire – the building was rebuilt in Gothic splendor. Walking through the vaults of Augustiner Keller today, you can feel this era in every stone. These are the same walls that once offered people shelter, warmth, and connection.

Baroque Elegance & New Wings

In the 17th century: renovation. Baroque, elegant, generous. A town councilor – Oswald Haller – gave the house new life, new wings. And so a townhouse became a proud inn. Since 1629, it has carried the name “Engl” – resonant, protective, elevated. Perhaps because here, one felt a little closer to heaven.

Arriving in Living History

Even today – centuries later – this spirit remains. The rooms? Rich in history with a modern touch. The floors? Creak softly like old stories. The walls? Strong and full of memories. Goldener Engl is not just a hotel but a home with many lasting memories and emotional moments – “Memorable Moments,” as we lovingly call them.

A place that connects – then as now

Between Hall’s historic town center, Goldener Engl, Augustiner Keller, and Angelshare, you meet people who welcome with character, serve with joy, and preserve with pride what makes this place so special.

Anyone visiting Engl feels history – and becomes part of it. Perhaps that is exactly what Goldener Engl has done for centuries: connecting people across time. In a house that never stands still, even though it is firmly rooted in its history.
